I am very interested in computer graphics technology and such. My dream is to one day be able to design and animate graphics for movies. (Is pixar a way too far reach?) Im only 16 so that may change but it may not. The only thing is that I am not a talented artist or anything. I can’t draw amazingly like everyone else. I don’t see how I can create something on the computer if I can barely create something on paper. Am I screwed? Should I move on from this dream?
Practice, my friend, is the key.
Unlike what most people think, artistic capabilities are not limited to those who are "gifted" or "artistic from birth." Drawing and other artistic endeavors can be learned. You just need some patience and a lot practice.
If you’re into animation, you’re in for a whole lot of fun, since its one of the more technical areas of design. You’ll not only need to learn drawing but some computer techniques too. But don’t worry–there are a lot of people who draw lousy on paper yet create masterpieces digitally.
I myself draw like crap on paper, but hey, I’m working as a graphic designer with a roster of clients and some of my works have made their way into several big places. What I lack in pencil and paper abilities, I make up for with mouse and tablet ninjutsu.
You’re young and you have a lot of things ahead of you. I advise that you start practicing now. Read some books on drawing. I recommend Victoria Vebell’s "The Basics of Drawing" (see link below). It’s a great introductory textbook and you’ll learn a lot from it–and you’ll certainly discover that you have what it takes to draw great images.
So get your sketchpad (you do have one, don’t you?) And start practicing. Don’t give up on your dreams just because you think you’re not that good. It’s better to fail trying than to fail without even giving it a shot..
I hope this helped!.. ^_^
